Swine flu

Should people with HIV/AIDS be concerned about swine flu? No more than most other people, according to an interview with Dr Joel Gallant from John Hopkins University by The Body.

Swine flu is a new strain of flu to which no-one is yet immune and for which there is no vaccine. This makes everyone vulnerable to it, but it is treatable with antivirals such as Tamiflu, which are available in Australia.

HIV does not make you more susceptible to swine flu, or to flu in general, but having the flu can increase your risk of getting pneumonia, which is a serious condition for people with HIV. Take the usual precautions against getting a cold and if you have flu symptoms (a high fever, aches and pains) see your doctor.
